I work in wood, cement, clay, stone and bronze. Most of my pieces now involve stone. I get great satisfaction  from turning a block of stone into an idea or emotion I have felt, or being inspired to create something suggested by the material itself. The sculptures are largely representative/ figurative. Pieces vary in size from approximately 15x15x15cms to 180x90x90cms.

My pieces are in the collections of President Mary McAleese, the European Commission, the Office of Public Works, Vincent Ferguson, Dermot Desmond, Chris de Burgh, University of Limerick Visual Arts Collection,  “Art in State Buildings (1995-2005)” and in the Patrick J. Murphy Collection. Other private collectors in Ireland, Britain, Spain, Belgium, Japan, Germany and Brazil have also purchased my work.

I create with anything that is available. Materials range from Elm, from the Dutch Elm-diseased trees cut down in Herbert Park, to the very dense Guyanese Greenheart laurel, salvaged from the old harbour walls in DunLaoghaire. The Greenheart was harvested over 120 years ago from what was then British Guyana, a colony on the north-east of South America. Though difficult to carve, it is ideal for open-air sculpture as it almost everlasting.

Small blocks of Bath stone from a demolished building in Pearse Street have provided a medium for intricately detailed work. Bog oak or bog yew from Forenaught in Co. Waterford and Wicklow granite give a connection with the distant past.

At present, I am concentrating on combination works carved from white marble and black Kilkenny limestone. The fossils in the limestone and pieces of cast bronze add life to the contrasting colours.

It can take hours and hours of blocking out, carving and then sanding and polishing with beeswax to get the required finish. I hope the end result is visually satisfying, involves you mentally and invites you to touch and feel it.
